Call for Head Coach - Fall 2024/Spring 2025 Season 


About the club

The Washington Renegades Rugby Football Club is located in the heart of Washington DC. Since our founding as the first International Gay Rugby (IGR) team in North America, inclusivity is at the heart of our mission. We actively recruit players from, and support the LGBTQ+ community in the Washington DC area. 


We are a member of USA Rugby’s Capital Rugby Union and compete in the Men’s Division III and IV in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, and compete in the Bingham Cup, a global tournament of IGR clubs hosted every two years in a different location.


A brief summary of what we’re looking for

The Renegades' mission is to teach and play rugby, to forge new friendships and celebrate others' differences, and to give back to our supportive communities through charitable and educational activities. This position is a good fit for you if you are excited about growing the sport of rugby regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, race, ethnicity or income, and think rugby should be fun. 


Expectations

As the head coach for the Renegades you are expected to take the overall lead for coordinating all aspects of the teams on-field activities, including training. This includes but is not limited to 


  • Implementing an overall game strategy with objectives for the pre-, in-, and postseason
  • Identify, nominate and support assistant coaches in their development as coaches
  • Plan, attend, and coach practice with players with different abilities (Tuesdays & Thursdays 7pm-9pm, beginning around August 13) 
  • Attend and coach 15s matrix matches for the fall and spring seasons
  • Identify coaching equipment needs and make proposals to board for potential purchase
  • Commitment to coaching and professional development through clinics and workshops
  • Support player recruitment and retention efforts


Our Head Coach embraces the Renegades' ethics of inclusion, which includes but is not limited to 


  • Teaching new players about the rules and regulations of the sport of rugby
  • Ensure that our team values, such as inclusion and accessibility, are playing out in our practices and matches by providing a harassment-free sporting environment
  • Balance a serious approach to coaching with conveying the sense of fun and enjoyment of the game to others.


Required Qualifications



  • Current World Rugby Level 1 Coaching Certification or above
  • At least 1 year of rugby coaching experience; preferably at club level
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
