JOIN THE RENEGADES
Recruits,
Happy Pride from the Washington Renegades Rugby Football Club at the Capital Pride Festival!
Founded in 1998, the Washington Renegades hold the distinction of being the first North American member club of International Gay Rugby (IGR), which today comprises nearly 100 rugby clubs worldwide.
On August 1st we will return to training every Thursday and Tuesday evening, 7 till 9 PM at Cardozo Education Campus' football field, located at the intersection of Florida Ave. NW and 13th St. NW. Enter the gate at 13th St., spot the rugby players, and say hi! If you are an experienced rugger, wear the usual kit; if you are new to rugby, just dress as if you were going for a run, or to the gym. Do not let a lack of experience stand in your way. We have always prided ourselves on bringing newcomers to the game, and will work with newcomers from Day 1 to introduce you to the game.
As founders of International Gay Rugby, we hosted the first gathering of IGR Member clubs in April 2001. That September, Mark Bingham of the San Francisco Fog RFC became one of the heroes of September 11, 2001. Since 2002, the biennial championship of IGR has been named in his honor. The Renegades have travelled the US and around the world participating in previous Bingham Cup tournaments, winning the Bingham Shield in 2016, 2022 and 2024, the Bingham Bowl in 2018, the Hoagland Shield in 2022, and the Hoagland Tankard in 2024.
We are a member of USA Rugby (USAR), the sport's national governing body, as well as the Capital Rugby Union, competing in USAR's Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC). In 2014, we reached the national quarter/semi-finals, a first for an IGR-member club. We currently field two sides, one in Division III and one in Division IV.
